About the Adelaide River Area

The town was first settled in 1870 when workers building the Overland Telegraph Line constructed a depot . The construction of the railway line from Darwin to Pine Creek in 1888 brought more growth to the town. It then become a major military headquarters during World War II and was home to the 119 Australia Hospital. After the bombing of Darwin on the 19th of February 1942, it became the centre of military activity. It played a central role in the defence of Australia until the end of the war. On 11 January 1962, an area of 626.8 hectares was proclaimed as a town site and officially given the same name as the adjacent Adelaide River.
