Wilcannia

Once a thriving port for cargoes of wool shipped along the Darling by river steamers, Wilcannia today boasts a legacy of historic treasures including well-preserved sandstone buildings quarried from local sandstone and a National Trust-listed bridge.

Visit the former Athenaeum Library from 1883, now the town’s Pioneer Museum, to learn the histories of the town’s heritage, including the 1880 post office and its attached residence, the Club Hotel which dates from 1879. The Athenaeum’s original committee included Charles Dickens’s son, Edward Dickens.

The historic town of White Cliffs is an easy drive on the sealed road from Wilcannia. Australia’s oldest commercial opal field, White Cliffs began mining opals in the 1880s and is home to local opal showrooms. White Cliffs is also famous for its cool, all-white underground motel and dwellings.

Paroo-Darling National Park is an area of outstanding beauty just over one hours’ drive from White Cliffs, and almost two hours’ north of Wilcannia, where you can swim, fish and relax by the river. Settle down for the night at Coach and Horses campground if you wish to spend more time in the area.
