Childers is located on the Bruce Highway 325 kilometres north of the Queensland state capital, Brisbane. It is in the Bundaberg Region of the Wide Bay-Burnett area of Queensland and lies 52 kilometres south west of the major town of the region, Bundaberg.

It is a rural town and locality set on a ridge overlooking fields of rich volcanic soil, that has a long, rich history. The Traditional Owners of the area are the Dundaburra group who are part of Kubbi Kubbi nations. Their descendants still live in the region.

About the Childers area

European settlers first came to the region in the 1850’s. They established sheep and cattle runs and began growing sugar cane in the 1870’s. Sugar cane is still a key crop grown in the area as well as avocado’s, macadamias and vegetables.
Charming and full of history, Childers has beautiful leafy streets and a scenic outlook over the surrounding countryside. The Queensland Heritage Register lists many of the historically significant buildings in the mainstreet.

Things to See and Do

Spend the day enjoying the tastes of wines produced in the local area. The Childers Wine Trail combines country charm with cellar doors such as Hill Of Promise Winery, Vintners Secret, Cellar Door and Cafe and Brierley Wines.

See meerkats and watch a croc feeding show at the Snakes Downunder Reptile Park and Zoo. They also have a fantastic Snake House as well as a koala enclosure and a kangaroo reserve where the animals can be hand fed. Undeniably a fun and affordable day out for the whole family!

Is history more your thing? In that case, step back in time and visit the Childers Historical Complex. It features early cottages, a post office, a former school building and two steam locomotives. There is also a museum coupled with displays that tell the story and history of Childers area.
