The Lake

Located approximately 4 Klms East of Quilpie on on the Diamantina Developmental Road, The Lake (also known as Lake Houdraman) is an oasis in the middle of the outback.

There is easy access for 2 Wheel Drive Vehicles, Buses, Motorhomes and carvans at The Lake and they offer level powered camping without the restriction of small designated sites. The Amenities Block has flushing toilets, hand basins with soap dispensers and hot showers. Also on offer are very quiet and tranquil unpowered campsites along the banks of Lake Houdraman, with loads of open flat shady camp sites in a bush setting. Fully self contained RV’s can camp on the west side of The Lake or if you need to be closer to the amenities you can camp on the east side. All sites have views of the lake and children are welcome to ride bicycles around the campgrounds and swim in the lake. Why not try your hand at fishing in the Lake or just sit and watch the abundant and varied bird life. At night, you may like to take in the awesome sunsets and spectacular stargazing, far away from city lights.

The lake itself is a beautiful natural expanse of water set amongst shady gum trees. Seasonally, thousands of glorious water lilies line the banks in the shallow water. This lush oasis is home to a vast array of birds and native animals, making it an ideal location to birdwatch and photograph some of Quilpie Shire’s unique wildlife. Only a ten minute drive from Quilpie, visiting this beautiful, natural lake teeming with native birds makes it difficult to believe this is outback Queensland.

Please keep in mind that The Lake is on a working sheep & cattle property so please treat this beautiful area with respect and do not drive elsewhere on the property.

Open fires are permitted but only when the weather permits. If there is a fire ban, obviously no fires are allowed. Please be aware that, due to the surroundings, you must be able to contain your own grey water when camping at The Lake. You cannot discharge over the ground!(source: www.thelakequilpie.com)

Please remember this is a bush track so drive to the conditions. The road is suitable for caravans and camper trailers but only in good weather.

There is some mobile phone service (depending on your carrier) and television reception here.
Dogs are welcome at this campsite but please be responsible!
