Newbridge

Region:     Area:     State:

The History of Newbridge dates back to a period earlier than gold mining in Victoria. The Loddon River could be forded just south of the current bridge. The main road from Melbourne to Swan Hill ran through Castlemaine, Maldon, then crossing the ford at Newbridge continued on to Swan Hill. The Loddon River at Newbridge has long been known as a great relaxing spot to fish. Known as the “Fisherman’s Haven”, Newbridge is a town famous for its fishing and hospitality. Set in a picturesque valley it provides a great place to stop. The quiet streets are great for walking and cycling, as are many tracks along the Loddon River. Campsites are available on the banks of the river at the Newbridge Riverside Reserve with toilets and shower available. Camping fees and shower tokens is payable at General Store and Newbridge Hotel. The tennis courts are open to the public and the key is also available at the General Store during business hours: Monday – Friday 7am -5 pm and weekends 9am – 4pm. The Loddon River also provides opportunities for peaceful canoeing or trying your hand at kayaking on the rapids. A leisurely stroll around the town with its Historic streetscapes allow the visitor to step back in time and appreciate the old buildings. The natural bush provides a wonderful place for bird watching, spotting kangaroos and observing the wildlife along the river. – See more at: http://www.loddon.vic.gov.au/Visit/Local-attractions/Newbridge#sthash.zNRNiE8I.dpuf
