Benarkin is located on the Blackbutt Range approximately 3.5 km east of Blackbutt and 17km west of Moore, just off the D’Aguilar Highway. The name Benarkin is an Aboriginal word meaning blackbutt which is a common variety of local tree. The Benarkin State Forest is located to the east and south of the town.
The nearby town of Blackbutt is the origin of the town and the two towns are often referred to as the joint entity Blackbutt-Benarkin.
The Benarkin General Store acts as a Community Postal Agency and is also a newsagent and sells produce and fuel as well as some general supermarket items. First Settlers Park, which is a popular overnight stop for travellers, is across the road from the general store.
